The Township was first organized as the Town of Kent in 1834 and designated Grand Rapids Township in 1842. The Township is primarily a community of single-family homes with four large parks and the home of the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. The commercial areas are comprised of medical facilities and support retail located along Cascade Road and the East Beltline that serve the residents and the local business community. Grand Valley State University was established in 1960 with its primary campus in Allendale, Michigan and secondary locations in Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, and Traverse City have been built to accommodate their growing enrollment. Since it began, enrollment has grown to just over 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students. They are a public, liberal arts school with 200 areas of study, offering 86 undergrad and 35 graduate degrees.
